tiny newsletter edition #11: hygge supply house tour

hi friends!

as you may remember from last week’s tiny, i just went up north with my parents to stay at an airbnb that’s a hygge supply house – a kit house from a company i've been obsessed with for years. so let's do a tour, welcome, come on in!

each hygge supply house is customized from a set of standard plans, and this one is a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house with an attached exterior living room (just the roof, no walls). as you can see, it's a ranch – just one floor and basically a simple rectangle. imo, the form is beautiful. (in my dad's opinion, it's "unbalanced" lol)

the exterior is cladded with spruce that's treated to stand up to the elements, and there's huge floor to ceiling (9' 9") windows all around. this particular home is on an elevated plot, so there's a narrow walkway you take from the driveway to get to the front door.

when you step inside, you're at the halfway point of the house. to your right are 2 bedrooms with attached bathrooms. to your left is an open concept main living space and exterior living room. and in front of you is a narrow walkway that's making good use of every inch – with built in storage and bunk beds on the left, and a half bath, washer/dryer, and hot water tank concealed behind paneled cabinet doors on the right.

each section of the house (bedrooms, main living space, exterior living room) is supported by steel framing, which isn't typical for residential construction projects. it's a super efficient and sturdy way of building, and the beams were painted to match the interior wall color perfectly. good bones for the house!

both bedrooms were lovely – more built in storage and tall windows, and though they were physically back-to-back, they were sound proofed. my only critique of the bathrooms was that they had wood flooring and no doors (!) which led to colder-than-necessary showers and a bit of water damage around the base. i'd want to see if i could put in tile instead. plus, proper doors.

the living area was spacious. kitchen first! there's a huge island, with a countertop made from recycled plastic and a sink and dishwasher built right into it. there's an impressive amount of storage here too, and even the fridge and freezer are paneled! i'd want to know if i'd be possible to put in a garbage disposal and also change the location of the oven – it was rly low

the living room had a giant table that easily seated 6, and a big sofa/lounge area with a fireplace. i'd like to double the number of small ceiling lights, it was a bit dark in here. also, this room was missing window shades, i'd want to add those in. from here there's access to the attached outdoor living room, where there was a second fireplace, outdoor furniture, and a grill. although we visited in the dead of winter, i could see this getting a ton of use the rest of the year.

the whole point of this company is that everything is included with your purchase of the house. you select the finishes, but that's pretty much it! the house can also be fully off the grid (though lol you know me, idk if i'm a 'off the grid' girlie. but it's good to know it's possible). did i mention the floor has radiant heating? such a nice feature.

i was sad when it was time to go! i felt inspired and calm here, and as we drove away, already wanted to come back and write or read or cook a special meal for people i love here. maybe i'll have a hygge supply house of my own one day – to live in, rent out, or as a global warming contingency plan (wish i was joking). you'll be the first to know.

💌 and that's the tiny letter! thank you for reading, xo aud
