tiny newsletter #141: a sliver of beacon
hi friends,
to the surprise of absolutely no one (neither myself nor friend of the newsletter erica gardner), i absolutely loved dia beacon. have you been? it's a contemporary art museum a 90 min train ride outside of the city.
to get there from nyc, take the metro-north railroad from manhattan to beacon, then it's just a 10 min walk away. when you arrive, it looks like a small + low brick building, but inside you'll see it goes back much farther than you'd think.
my favorite install was by meg webster, an artist from sf who uses natural materials to create her sculptures. here, that looked like a patchwork square of live moss and a wall of beeswax, a pyramid of salt and a soft mound of sand. my kinda art nonsense!!
i was also a fan of rita mcbride, an artist from iowa, who created modular bleachers from wood and fiberglass. it can all be deconstructed into stackable pieces (aka flatpack) and her design files were on posters nearby.
plus michael heizer, an artist from ca, has an install of steel pits in perfect geometric shapes. each is 20 ft deep – good thing there's a waist-height glass wall to protect anyone from falling in, haha.
then again, 1 room was literally just curtains which...we were not impressed by. but don't miss the others, along w gardens on the grounds, a stop at their excellent cafe, and taking a 5 min walk to long dock park to sit by the hudson river.
i highly rec this museum for an easy day trip outside of the city. i'd go back anytime.
💌 and that's the tiny letter! thank you for reading, xo aud
